Steve Costa

Obituary of Steve Lawrence Costa

Steve Lawrence Costa of Lynchburg, Va., passed away on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, at the age of 86. He passed away at his beloved home on Timberlake which he and his wife Sandy purchased in 1966. He passed away doing what he loved, watering his tomato plants with the rising sun and light mist hovering over the lake surface.

Steve was born on March 6, 1936, to the late Steve and Mary Costa of Auburn, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Ann (Lee Roy) Gwinn and Catherine (Mel) Pritchett.

Steve is survived by his wife, Sandy, of 66 years; two sons, Darrell (Rhonda) of Lynchburg, and Don (Lorie) of Land O Lakes, Fla.; four grandchildren, Michael Costa of Austin, Texas, Caitlin Katz (Aaron) of Land O Lakes, Fla., Lyndsey Costa (Fiance Andrew Van Haren) of Lynchburg, and Austin Costa (Savannah Rose) of Charlotte, N.C.; two great-grandchildren, Claire and Cade Katz; and one sister, Lucille (John) Guinn of Auburn, Ill.

Steve and Sandy moved to Lynchburg in 1965 from Illinois after he was transferred as an employee of Western Electric. He retired from Western Electric (AT&T) after 31 years of service at the age of 52. He and Sandy were very fortunate to then be able to spend the next 20 winters in Florida near their son Don and his family. They have many friends from all over the U.S. whom they met there.
Steve was a founding member of the Jaycees in Virden, Ill., and was a member of the Moose Lodge 1727 in Lynchburg. He also helped with forming of the New London Ruritan baseball team and assisted with coaching youth baseball, basketball and football. He loved most sports but mostly enjoyed watching his grandkids playing and never missed watching the Little League World Series.
Steve was a very kind humble man who loved his family and worked extremely hard and sacrificed much to provide for his boys to ensure they had opportunities that he and Sandy did not have. He loved the outdoors and nature. Hunting, fishing, watching the birds, and gardening were among his favorites. He also enjoyed doing the morning cross-word puzzels.
He was known as the man who could fix anything and offered his assistance to anyone in need. He also enjoyed cooking, especially treats like old fashioned popcorn, fudge and other candies. Old fashioned popcorn was provided on most visits and the fudge and other candies were his Christmas gift to neighbors and friends. They always loved it and often requested more.

The family would like to thank Steve and Sandy’s neighbors for all their love and support over the years. They have been a blessing.
