Obituary of Mary Elizabeth Wood

Mary Elizabeth Wood, 97, passed away peacefully, after a short illness, on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at Runk & Pratt Assisted Living in Lynchburg, Va.  She was born on July 29, 1924 in Albemarle County, Charlottesville, Va. She was the last born and surviving child of the late Jack Wesley and Fannie Madison Wilkerson.

After retiring from Comdial, Mary enjoyed spending time in Charlottesville and Arlington, VA with her son.  She loved classic country & gospel music, especially Johnny Cash and never missed her favorite game shows, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

Mary is survived by her son, Gaylon Edward Wood, Jr., who was the center of her world and his sweet, grand fur-baby, Duncan, who she helped raise from a puppy.  She is also survived by nieces; Brenda Thorp, Virginia (Bill) Hubbard, and Helen Lancaster; nephews:  Brad (Linda) Fitzgerald, Danny (Pat) Lancaster, Russell Lancaster (Ann) and other great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Willie “Bill” Wilkerson, James Wilkerson, Russell Wilkerson and his sisters:  Doris Owen, Cora Fitzgerald, Gertie Lancaster and Armetta “Nancy” Brandt. 

There will be a graveside service on Monday, October 18 at 1:00 PM at the Monticello Memory Gardens in Charlottesville, VA with Rev. Dan G. Mason officiating.  Attendees are asked to wear a mask.
