Obituary of Georgia Canody May

Georgia Canody May, 97, of Forest, VA, died Tuesday, July 27th at Runk and Pratt Liberty Ridge in Lynchburg. Born February 23,1924 in Campbell County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Earis Canody and the late Georgia Wright Canody. She graduated from New London Academy in 1942. During her time there, she met Wayne Brown May, whom she wed in 1946. They were married 56 years.

 

Georgia retired after 20 years as a dental assistant to William N. Riley, D.D.S. in Lynchburg. She was a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star Virginia, Forest Chapter #143 where she was a Past Matron. She was a member of Forest United Methodist Church for over seven decades.

 

In addition to her parents, Georgia was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, W.E. (Pete) and H.T. (Happy) Canody, and two sisters, Gaynelle Gray and Kathleen Moore.

 

Georgia was a beloved mother and grandmother to her daughter Carolyn May Hurt (Robert) and son Wayne Brown May, Jr. (Sharon), both of Forest; her granddaughter Dana Hurt McMahan (Esteban) of Chapel Hill, NC; two great grandchildren Joelle McMahan Payne (Joseph) of Charlotte, NC and David Edwin McMahan (Makayla) of Durham, NC; her great-great grandson, Carter Nataniel McMahan; as well as a caring aunt to numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

 

The family wishes to thank all the caregivers and medical professionals who assisted Georgia in her final years.

 A funeral service will be held at Diuguid Funeral Service-Wiggington Road Chapel, 385-8900 at 11:30am on Monday, August 2, 2021, followed by visitation and reception. A private graveside service will be at Virginia Memorial Park in Forest.
