Obituary of Nannie Cox Smith

Nannie C. Smith, 86, of Rustburg, affectionately known as “Shula” or “Nan”, passed away Thursday, January 21, 2021, at her home. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ernest P. Smith.

She and her late husband were married on November 21, 1953 and spent many wonderful and happy years together

Born October 30, 1934 in Evington, VA, she was a daughter of the late Robert Moorman Cox and Myrtle Lee Hall Cox. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. She loved to cook for her family, spend time at Myrtle Beach, sing for the Lord with the Hallelujah Gospel Singers and attend her church. She is survived by her two daughters, Loretta Mason (Cornell) and Donna Mays (Mike); her granddaughter, Michelle Johnson (Kevin);two great-grandchildren, Aaron  and Isaac Johnson; great-great granddaughter, Aaliyah Williams, who brought her much joy; her sister, Betty Adkins (Ray) as well as many nieces and nephews, especially Lisa Mitchell , Ray Adkins and Wilma Johnson, whom she had many telephone conversations with. Two brothers, four sisters, and a special niece preceded her in death.

Mama had many devoted friends and family members that we would like to thank for their love and support during her illness. Additionally, the family wishes to thank Centra Hospice for their wonderful care and concern.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, January 24, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Cumbie Community Cemetery, Rustburg with Pastor David Critcher officiating. Viewing will be Saturday from Noon until 5:00 PM. At the funeral home.
