I was a student at VBH SON when Dr Garrett was director there. She was always encouraging and not only a leader but also our friend. She truly cared about each and every one of us. What a lovely lady.

So sad to hear about the passing of Dr. Garrett/ GiGi. I loved her dearly. She was a huge asset to the nursing community. She and I worked together for 7 years but our relationship went much deeper than that. She will always have a special place in my heart. She referred to me as Chickie... Christie Eubank

I’m living proof of my sister’s lifelong devotion to teaching. When I was pre-school age and Eleanor was about 10 or so, we would play “school” using a blackboard we had. Never had real chalk, but Mama’s old Argo starch chunks worked just great. Of course, she was the teacher and I was the pupil. Our “schoolroom” was the little space off the kitchen where the washer was located. When Sis taught you, you learned! I don’t know if that’s the reason I learned to read before I went to first grade, but I do remember Eleanor teaching me to add and subtract when I was four. Evidently, Sis made things easy to learn, something she spent her life doing. I was just the first of the hundreds of students to benefit from her teaching gifts. When I stumbled into teaching myself, I found what Eleanor already knew. Teaching pays one in far more ways than money. I miss you so, Sis.
