I was very sorry to hear the news about Eric. Kitty, my sympathy goes out to you and I am keeping you in my prayers.
As others have mentioned, Eric was truly a unique and very intelligent individual. Like Brent, one of my first thoughts was that Eric is reunited with George Brazill and, as a result, heaven had better watch out! They form a critical mass of engineering capabilities, coupled with out-of-the-box thinking, and you never know where that will lead.
Eric's love of animals was driven home to me in the '70's when he strongly recommended that I bring my dog indoors on a particularly cold night. It was obvious that he really cared for the dog's well being.
This world lost a caring, smart, unique person and he will be missed.

Eric and I were close friends from the 70s until perhaps the early 2000s. We didn't see much of each other in these latter years but he and Kitty were and always will be present in my mind. My fondest memory is of Eric sitting in my kitchen on Washington street bouncing Donna on his knees. She was a little over 2 years old and we had just taken custody of her. Eric had argued with me about doing this as he was against it. That day though, he looked at me, smiled, and said "I never thought I would, but I like this." Thank you Eric, and thank you Kitty.

My adventure with Eric started in the fall of 1974 when he hired me to join his group at B&W. It was obvious from the initial interview that I was going to be working for a very smart and unique engineer. I don’t think Eric ever forgot a single acquired fact in his entire career, whether it be nuclear or Chevy rat motor or just some random bit that interested him. He set an incredibly high bar at work, and though I never could compete, he undoubtedly made me much more capable than I ever would have achieved without his mentorship. Outside of work Eric was just as committed in every endeavor. Early on a few of us helped him modify a Toyota Land Cruiser by dropping in a small block Chevy, not because it was needed but because it was fun. It was a complicated process but with Eric at the helm it was done perfectly. Sessions with Eric and his best friend George Brazill, another brilliant and unique engineer, were fascinating learning experiences and great fun. When he got into photography as a hobby, he turned out beautiful large-scale panoramic prints the hard way by stitching together many individual shots; he didn’t do anything halfway. He cared a great deal about everyone, friend or family. When I had a cardiac stent implanted in 1998 Eric made a point of driving every weekday morning to pick me up so we could go walking for an hour before I went to work. He’d never let me drive or even meet him at our walking venue; he insisted on picking me up because he knew I needed it and this way he could be sure I didn’t miss a session. Needless to say, it helped me greatly and he made each session fun. Meeting Kitty was the best bonus in knowing Eric. She was the prefect match for him, she has the calmness and humor to endure Eric’s many idiosyncrasies. They have both been great friends and a terrific influence on our family. Eric has been at times like a second father to me, and he will be sorely missed. In fondest memory, Brent & Sandee Brooks

Eric was one of my favorite people, he was also my Godfather and I’m lucky to have had him and Kitty in my life! There was never a dull moment with Eric, he always made me chuckle and I never doubted, even when I was a grumpy, frustrating and annoying teenager, that he loved and accepted me for who I was. His honesty and straightforwardness was something that I could always count on, whether I liked it or not, but that was good for me because I never once doubted his integrity. I enjoyed his curmudgeonly character, his dry wit, his kindness and generosity he showed to me and my kids. I never had a bad memory of Eric, he is and forever will be one of the very special people in my life, and my life is all the better because of it. My father also thought highly of Eric, he enjoyed his company, his friendship, their shared memories over the years and the fun times they had on several special trips together with their wives. Two years ago, Eric wrote such kind and thoughtful words about my father when he passed. It truly showed Eric’s wonderful story telling ability, strong character, warmth and humor he had for those that he cared about. I’ve always known that Eric was one of the smartest people I’ve ever meet and I would even brag about him over the years, noting that my Godfather was a rocket engineer. Friends tended to be more impressed that he was into hot rods and could turnout a Ford engine like nobody’s business. To borrow words from Eric’s letter about my dad, they also work beautifully for Eric too - “Even without great expression and definition of his creed, you knew what he believed in and stood for. Honest and upright, his principles were true....although he was not complicated, he also was not superficial.” I will truly miss, Eric “Mr Grumpy”, you were one of a kind!! Tons of love to Kitty!!
