Borrowing from the pen of Wendell Berry:
In the day of his work
when the grace of the world
was upon him, he made his way,
not turning back or looking aside,
light in his stride.
Now may the grace of death
be upon him, his spirit blessed
in the deep song of the world
and the stars turning, the seasons
returning, and long rest.
John was a good friend, always the master of his
craft, with a ready smile and helpful word to help
choose the right cut. But he was much more than that.
John was 'old school' --- as to his craft, and as to his being
a true gentleman, a gentle person. But he was much more than that.
His passing not only leaves so many of us that knew him
deeply saddened, but in a changing world of consumer
delivery he is an anchor departed, and he leaves a hole in the
web of our dear and trusted friends.
We are thankful to have known John. Good 'John
memories' abound. God bless John's memory, God bless his family.

The world was a better place with John in it. A butcher by trade but a true philosopher at heart and a great family man. Rich, Bella and I are terribly sad for all of you but understand that even the brightest of stars do not last forever. Love to all of you ...

Ida,
Linda and I were so sorry to hear of John’s passing. He will truly be missed by all of his friends and family. If you were a friend of John, he treated you like family. He always made us feel welcome and relaxed. We have wonderful memories of visiting your home and going out for dinner. John had a great sense of humor. He laughed a lot. We will remember him that way. He was also a hard worker and I was fortunate to work with him at The Fresh Market and Auburnlee Market. He was a talented butcher, always willing to share his skills and knowledge. To me, he was The Master of Master Butchers. He was a great guy and a good friend and he will be deeply missed. Our thoughts are with you and your family.

One of my fondest memories of John was when I visited with him and his wonderful family in the summer of 2001. I went out to visit with them at their home in Tucson Arizona. They were always wonderful hosts. But upon my arrival John took me on a fabulous tour of the many sites and attractions there such as, The Old Tucson Studios, Old Tombstone, The Tombstone Courthouse, Bisbees Mining Museum and such. John was just a really good guy! RIP My friend
