I remember roaming the neighbourhood with childhood buddies and siblings when I was growing up next-door to Mary and Errett, Sr at 3414 Plymouth Place, and coming across him sitting on a log chipping stone (flintknapping?) into primitive tools near Mary and Errett's backyard wood pile. He would show and tell with us until 1) he would say “I have to focus on this work now” or 2) we ran off to pester some other poor neighbour (!) I remember him letting us “have a go” on at least one occasion. Another very formative memory was a day he took a bunch of us kids on a botany adventure in the woods. He showed us all the plants we could eat, and others that we must avoid due to being poisonous. This was the 70’s-80’s long before the current vogue of sustainable, organic, biodynamic practices. Errett was an important role model for me as I didn't feel I fit any of the social cliques Lynchburg seemed to be organised into. He did not appear to fit any of the stereotypical moulds either, which was inspiring and relieving to me. His creative and academic accomplishments also fuelled my confidence in following my dreams. Thanks Errett, and many condolences and happy past, present and future memories to Linda, Melody, Bill, Pam, David and the rest of family and friends of Errett. Kind Regards, Laura Mitchell (daughter, Linda & Charlie Mitchell, 3414 Plymouth Place. Currently residing in Western Australia.)

I want to thank Errett for all his tutelage in stone tool making and the excitement he created in myself and others in his skillful and artful betrayal of early man. May you rest in peace my wonderful teacher. Thank you for your friendship and peace be with your loved ones throughout this earth.

From my earliest memories on Plymouth Place up until the other day when the Mattaponi Pamunkey River Association met at the Museum, there has always been Errett in my life. I think of him often and will really miss knowing that he is living on the James. My condolences to all the family. Wish I could be with you on the 15th but I am moving out of my home next week and am packing. My love to you all.

I wish to extend my condolences to the family of Errett Callahan. Errett was a major contributor to the development of the Pamunkey Indian Museum and a friend to the Tribe. I appreciate his dedication to the restoration/creation of many of the implements in the Museum and his great friendship. He will be remembered as a true friend.

In 1987, he began his Cliffside Workshops as a means to impart the knowledge he learned throughout the years about flint knapping and primitive technology to students and enthusiasts from around the world. My husband and I attended a workshop a few years ago and had the honor and privilege to meet Errett and have him demonstrate his talents. Our time spent with him is an experience we will always treasure.

He was an icon. He was considered to be one of the best knappers in the world, replicating everything from the Clovis culture to the Danish daggers. I took a weekend course from him at his house that allowed me to advance in my parallel flaking ability tremendously. He will be sadly missed.

Dr. Callahan's lifelong commitment to understanding past cultures and his untiring drive to recreate long gone technologies is rare, even with those that have similar backgrounds. Spending as much time as I have with him over the past several years has inspired me to remember those that came long before us and insure that they are not forgotten. Every time I pick up an antler billet, or nodule of Georgetown, split an Osage stave or sinew fletch an arrow I will think of you. Go in a good way wise man and know the thousands you have inspired to follow in your footsteps.
