Jesse Stinnette

Obituary of Jesse Wade Stinnette

Jesse Wade Stinnette, Sr., 94, of Lynchburg, passed away Friday, November 16, 2018.  Born in Amherst County, Virginia, on May 2, 1924, he was a son of the late Lonnie Daniel and Grace Cash Stinnette.  One of seven sons, he grew up farming in Bedford County.  During the Great Depression the family was largely self-supporting, growing their own vegetables and raising livestock, hunting and fishing.  From a young age, Jesse walked behind draft horses to plow the fields.  Like many of his generation, he reflected a spirit of self-reliance, loyalty to family and country, and a strong work ethic.

As a young man, he worked at the Lynchburg hosiery mill until he met the love of his life, Kathryn “Kitty” Chafee, who encouraged him to attend Phillips Business College where he studied accounting.  They were married in 1949.  Jesse was employed by Armour & Co. and worked at their offices in Lynchburg, Roanoke, and Bedford until he retired in 1986 after 32 years with the company.

Jesse was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kitty, his infant son, Ronnie, and five brothers.

In his later years, he enjoyed golf, long bicycle rides with his brother and best friend, Owen, and activities with his local Elks Lodge.  Long-time friend, Louise Trent Ashwell, became his cherished companion and they shared many happy hours together.

Jesse is survived by his daughter, Sharon and her husband, Fred Davis, and four sons, Wade and his wife, Lannie, Stephen and his partner Alvin Crawley, David and his wife, Andrea, and Christopher, and his brother Owen.  Jesse was much loved Paw-Paw to six grandchildren and a great-grandson.  His greatest joy was spending time with his family, sharing love and laughter, quiet moments and many adventures.

The family will receive friends at the Duiguid Wiggington Road Chapel on Monday, November 19, at 12:00 PM, followed by the funeral service in the chapel at 1:00 PM.  Burial will take place at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, November 20, at Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Jesse’s children wish to extend our deepest appreciation to the staff at The Carrington for their excellent, loving care of our father over the past two years.
