James Houck

Obituary of James Langhorne Houck

James Langhorne Houck, 57, died on November 10, 2018 after a brief but valiant battle with lung cancer.  Born on June 22, 1961, he was the son of the late Judie Perkins Houck and Thomas Langhorne Houck.  He is survived by his devoted wife, of 34 years, Martha Ramsey Houck.  He is survived by his father and stepmother, Joyce Cyrus Houck, his sister Kay Houck Tasso and her husband Eric, Dorothy (Bunny) Houck Saleeby.  He was predeceased by his mother and an infant brother Joseph Thomas Houck.

A native of Lynchburg, Virginia, he graduated E.C. Glass High School and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He loved his “Hokies” and “Skins”.

Jimmy was an independent lumber buyer employed by Augusta Lumber Industries.  He was a charter supporter and facilitator of Harvest Outreach, a nonresidential program for at risk children and their families.  Anywhere a helping hand was needed Jim would be there.  The outpouring of love and support, during this difficult time from friends and family has been phenomenal and deeply appreciated.

Jimmy’s sixteen nieces and nephews, as well as his godchildren, will always cherish him and his role in their lives.  He was a “listener”, mentor, counselor and best friend to each.

Interment will be for family at St Paul’s Episcopal Church Columbarium on Wednesday, November 14th at 11am.  A reception for extended family and all his many friends will be held at the Houck residence on Wednesday from 5pm to 7pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Harvest Outreach P.O. Box 4, Gladys, VA 24554 or to a charity of your choice.
