Obituary of Ruth Gordon

Ruth Gordon, 77 of Lynchburg, passed peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior. Ruth was born in Tennessee in 1940 to Hazel Thacker and the late William "Bill" Thacker. She met her husband, Don, a couple of years before they married in 1961. They have two sons: Phil Gordon, Scott Gordon and his wife Tammy, both of whom will easily attest to having fantastic childhoods and wonderful grown-up relationships with their parents. She has literally been the perfect grandmother to her three grandchildren: Emily, Jade and Madeline. Ruth was preceded in death by her brother, Harold Thacker. Ruth kept an awesome house, taught early learning to children for many years, was active in her church, Timberlake United Methodist Church, for most of her adult life, and took care of her family members whenever she could. She baked and decorated the most beautiful and delicious cakes -- many elaborate ones for weddings, major anniversaries, and other notable events. She made every holiday a meaningful one to her family. She loved joy, family, and special times together, and creatively worked to provide those in abundance to each of us. Most who knew Ruth felt she was one of the most giving people they had ever known. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Friday, June 9, 2017 at Diuguid Funeral Service & Crematory, Waterlick Chapel (434) 237-2722. Relatives and friends are welcome at the funeral home on Thursday from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Burial will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park. . Memorials may be given in her name for the UVA Health System Cancer Center.
