Obituary of Ellen Dame Murrie

Ellen Dame Murrie, 101, passed away peacefully in Lynchburg VA on September 13, 2017. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 16 at 1:00 PM in the ground floor chapel at Centenary United Methodist Church , Pastor Doug Gunsalus officiating. Memorial gifts may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church or Gentle Shepherd Hospice. Born on October 6, 1915 in Danville, VA, Ellen was the daughter of Ellen Dame Brydon and William Edgar Murrie. She moved with her family to Lynchburg as a child and graduated from Randolph Macon Woman's College. She taught school for two years. When World War II broke out, she moved to Arlington to work for the Army Security Agency, a branch of the Signal Corps that handled coded messages, ultimately becoming a supervisor. Later she returned to Lynchburg and worked as a typist in several positions, retiring from the Lynchburg Department of Social Services in 1980. Ellen was a creative and accomplished poet, hostess and card player and a lover of felines and children. She was a long-time member of Centenary United Methodist Church and was frequently seen walking in the Rivermont section of town with her sister, Hilda MacLaren Murrie, who survives her. She is also survived and lovingly remembered by her niece, Ellen Dame Rodgers Martin, and husband Wayne of Charlotte, NC; grand nephew William O. Gray, III ("Dusty") and wife Melany of Larchmont NY; grand niece Angelyn Martin Boucher and family of Charlotte, NC; and her cousins Lucy Murrie Bates Ponton of Drakes Branch, VA, Walter Murrie Bates and wife Gretchen of Charlotte Court House, VA, Charles Bates Ponton and family of Charlottesville, VA and Robert S. Ponton, Jr. and family of Overland Park, KS, as well as four great-grand nephews and a great-grand niece, several of whom have become skilled Rummikub players under Ellen's fierce and skillful tutelage. Ellen's family wishes to thank Sue Almond for her loving and compassionate care of Ellen, as well as neighbors Ned and Mary Bunch and all the good people at Generation Solutions, the Elms and Gentle Shepherd Hospice for their love, care and friendship.
