Obituary of Frederick Dabney Brown

Lynchburg - Fredrick Dabney Brown, 94, joined his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, October 25, 2017. Fred was born in MaGahesyville, Virginia on June 1, 1923 to William Dabney Brown and Ruth Showalter Brown. He was the oldest of three brothers: Merle W. Brown (deceased) and Hensel S.Brown. Fred was married to Tempie Glenn Mann of Harrisonburg, Virginia for 42 years before her death in 1984. Fred and Tempie moved to Waynesboro, Virginia in 1949, and raised their family in a series of ever larger homes, most of which shared the distinction of having a white "five board" fence, a feature that was truly one of Fred's favorite architectural details, most likely inspired by a childhood memory. Fred served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. Following his military tenure, he enrolled in Bridgewater College and received his bachelor's degree in finance. He later entered the automobile business where he worked until his retirement. If pushed, Fred would relate some of the most entertaining automobile stories you can imagine about his experiences dealing with both the famous and the infamous. Fred was a partner in the ownership of The Auto Exchange, owned Hillcrest Motors and was later employed at Newcomer Cadillac, Baugher Chevrolet and Brannock's Sales and Service, all in the Waynesboro area. During this time, he gained a well-known reputation for truthfulness and fairness in both his professional and personal endeavors. Fred and Tempie were founding members of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro, and were instrumental in establishing the new church, Fred as a Deacon and Tempie as the organist. That involvement facilitated the construction of the chapel and later the sanctuary. In every location that followed, Fred became active in church leadership and was highly sought after as a well versed financier. Fred thoroughly enjoyed his retirement. He researched his family's genealogy and recorded his findings for his children. He was inquisitive, often opinionated, kept up with world events and his memory of events from many years ago or just last week was the envy of many. Fred lived a long and eventful life and he leaves a legacy that will live even longer as a loving and caring man who placed his family, his faith, and the well-being of those around him, be they acquaintance or friend, as his highest priority. Joy Brown, Fred's second wife, preceded him in death in 2005. They resided at Smith Mountain Lake, where he was often referred to as the "mayor" of Moneta. Fred is survived by his children, Lane (Jackie), Debbie (Tim Hanger), Doug (Kathy), and Mitch (Susan) along with his wife, Barbara, who lives in Lynchburg. In addition, Fred had ten grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and stepchildren, all of whom valued his intellect, kindness, and gentle nature each and every day.
