Obituary of Marion Augusta Watkins Lewis

Marion Augusta Watkins Lewis passed away peacefully at her home in Evington on February 15, 2018, with the care of her family and her Lord and Savior. She was born at "Falkland" Evington, VA on March 12, 1922 and was the daughter of the late Eugene Haden Watkins and the late Grace Kabler Watkins. She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Edwin Boyd Lewis, and her sister, Capt. Eloise Watkins DuPuy (ret.). She is survived by her two daughters, Barbara Ann Lewis Haney (David) and Cynthia Marie Lewis of Evington, as well as six grandchildren, Jenny McLeroy (Mike) of Lynchburg, Molly Hunt and Ann Hunt, Dr. Joel Hodges (Jessica) and Jeremy Funderburk (Natalie) and Nathan Funderburk (Crystal), all of Evington, and step-grandson, Chase Haney (Heidi) of Lynchburg, as well as numerous great-grandchildren. Also special friends, Neil Buckley, Lois, Laura, Penny and Gwen. Much gratitude is extended to them for their warm companionship and excellent care of Marion. Marion Augusta, as she was fondly known, attended New London Academy and Petersburg School of Nursing. She served with the Red Cross as PBX operator during World War II. Marion was a member of Otterwood Presbyterian Church, the Adult Sunday School Class and Sunshine Club at Salem Methodist Church, and helped organize services at Church of the Good Shepherd. Marion was very committed to helping others in her community and was a participant in the formation of the volunteer program at the Training Center in Madison Heights. She was an avid bridge player, a correspondent for the Altavista Journal in gathering community news, co-founder of the Evington Thrift Store, a Girl Scout Leader and one who loved all children and animals. She was a past president of the Signal Mtn. Garden Club, a member of the Southern Guard of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Marion and Edwin also ran florist shops in Altavista and Rustburg and traveled and lived in many states during his career in the nuclear field. Marion Augusta was truly a "Southern Belle" and will be remembered for her compassion for others and her beautiful smile. A Graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2018, at The Church of the Good Shepherd, Evington, VA. There will not be any scheduled visitation hours, however family and friends may pay their respects at the service, as the church will be open.
